Getting Real About Workplace Violence  training:

  • Educates learners on the different types of workplace violence from verbal harassment to physical violence.
  • Helps learners recognize and identify concerning behaviors.
  • Provides practical guidance on what to do if a co-worker exhibits concerning behaviors.
  • Educates learners on what to do if an act of extreme violence occurs.
  • Provides practical strategies for de-escalating interactions with upset customers.
  • Helps learners develop desirable workplace behaviors that foster respect and psychological safety in the organization, including speaking up when noticing concerning behaviors.

Course Details

The course is comprised of core and optional modules. Employers can select and deploy modules based on the organization's compliance and workforce needs.

    • Module 1: What is Workplace Violence?

      • This module describes the different types of workplace violence from verbal harassment to physical violence.

      Training time:  7 minutes

    • Module 2: Concerning Behaviors

      • Encourages learners to: 
        • Speak up about concerning behaviors
        • Check in with their co-worker if their actions seem out of character
        • Bring concerns forward to a manager, HR, or security

      Training time: 8 minutes

    • Module 3: Run, Hide, Fight

      • Encourages learners to make a plan for what to do if an extreme act of violence should occur. Following training they will be able to:
        • Explain the Run, Hide, Fight strategies and when to use them
        • Explain the importance of having a plan

      Training time: 6 minutes

    • Module 4: De-escalation Strategies (required for NY State Retailers, encouraged for other retail organizations)

      • Encourages learners to utilize strategies to de-escalate interactions with upset or disgruntled customers to minimize the potential for the situation to escalate. After training they will be able to describe the steps of de-escalation:
        • Control Your Emotions
        • Apologize
        • Listen
        • Make an effort to help

      Training time: 5 minutes

      Mandatory for learners in organizations that fall under the New York Retail Worker Safety Act, recommended for all employees and managers who interact with customers.

    • Module 5: California and New York Retail Legislation Specifics

      • CA module explains the workplace violence prevention legislation in California.
      • NY Retail module explains the New York State legislation for retailers.

      Training time: 2-6 minutes

    • Module 6: Understanding the Progression of Violence (Manager Module)

      • Enables managers to:
        • Explain the progression to violence
        • Identify the different stages of behaviors that could lead to violence and explain what to do when an employee is exhibiting those signs.

      Training time: 7 minutes
